"The Best Assembly We've Ever Had."
Rhys never gets tired of hearing that.
With
two different science programs and a reading show, Rhys
stays very busy entertaining school crowds across the Pacific North
West.
For Quotes From Schools
Currently
an Oregon Museum of Science and Industry outreach program,
Rhys' "Science Circus" and "Gollyology" science shows have toured
hundreds of schools in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Arizona
and California.
His
"Reader's
Circus" has delighted thousands at schools, libraries and theatres
for years.
Rhys’ “edutainment” shows have
been presented at Confederation of School Administrators conferences,
on a "Live From AT&T Bell Laboratories" worldwide
television broadcast and as opening act of the first
Oregon Innovators in Education conference.
“The teachers and students
were amazed how Mr. Thomas was able to amuse the kids with
his verbal and
visual wit while teaching them such science concepts as centripetal
force and the law of gravity.”
- Smithsonian Institution Discovery Theater
The Shows
Science
Circus - The Physics of Fun
Rhys Thomas teaches Newtonian physics using a rare blend of science and circus
arts. Students will observe gravity through bowling ball juggling, gyroscopic
stability through glass bowl spinning, centripetal force with cowboy lariats,
center of mass on a six foot tall unicycle and inertia with the old tablecloth
pulling trick. Add the irresistable force of levity to even
more tricks and you’ve got a rough idea of what the Science Circus is
all about.

Gollyology
The sequel to "Science Circus," Gollyology teaches rotation around
center of mass with club juggling, balance with Russian free-standing Ladder
acrobatics, more gyroscopic stability with Japanese parasol tricks, inertia
with 17th century block juggling, and more. The show culminates in a
grand finale stunt:
JUGGLING ON A UNICYCLE ON A SLACK-ROPE! Golly.

Readers' Circus
Rhys shares the books from which he learned his tricks. Entirely
self-taught, Rhys is a perfect example of, "If you can read,
you can teach yourself almost anything."
Technical Stuff
All assemblies are
modular shows that can be presented in any length from 30-60
minutes for children from preschool to 8th grade and make
excellent all-ages family shows.
Entirely self contained, they can be presented
in an approximately 15’x15’ area with a 10’ or
greater ceiling height. Smaller areas can be catered to if Rhys
is notified in advance.
The production can use it’s own PA or the
presenter’s, needing only a single microphone input and
a wall-outlet power source. A basic light wash is fine, just
as long as there's plenty of light.
A colorful stage set is available where space and
time permit set-up.
